“Bright, airy and spacious” aptly describes this terrific south-facing 3 bedroom, 1 bath twin home. Built in the early part of the 20th century, it retains all of its original charm: beautiful wood floors, high ceilings, large windows. At the same time, its owners have given it the amenities we love today: updated kitchen and bath, new windows, excellent systems. Best of all, it is in super condition. It is located on a one-way street in the off-the-beaten-path Wissahickon neighborhood, a short walk to the trails of the Wissahickon Creek section of Fairmount Park and moments from Roxborough shops and Manayunk restaurants.

It sings: this beautifully cared for Victorian single home, circa 1900, its rich exterior colors distinct against the winter sky. Inside, the melody links harmonious color and decor in public rooms, 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. A mahogany wrap-around porch overlooking broad lawns, original interior shutters, pocket doors, oak detail, a lucious master bath all add their notes to this rich symphony. The lyric is engraved above the fireplace: “The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.”

Germantown, Awbury Historic District

Available for the very first time since it was designed by well-known architect Carl Ziegler and built in 1922, this property is a lovely stone detached residence, a simplified version of the Colonial Revival. Known on the city tax records as 6123 Boyer Street, the 3-story home offers 6 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, fireplaces, hardwood floors, a second floor sleeping porch and much more all in modest, yet surprisingly roomy proportions. It is pleasantly sited on a .97 acre lot that is at the heart of Awbury, an historic planned community of families that dates back to 1849. Developed in the 19th century as a summer country estate and into the early 20th century as permanent homes for the Cope family and its descendants, Awbury includes a number of architect-designed homes artfully placed on its many acres to have a separate, yet connected, relationship to one another. Its most distinctive characteristic is the importance the families of Awbury put on the natural area around them. Since 1849, Awbury has had a tradition of creating a green environment through careful landscaping, the planting of many trees and the keeping of many gardens. In 1916, the residents of Awbury took the progressive step of creating Awbury Arboretum to preserve the sylvan aspect of their community for generations to come. It is hard to imagine, when standing on the lawns of this property, that one is actually in the middle of a bustling city. In the early 1900's, Edwin Jellett, an historian of Germantown life, said of Awbury:

“...it is one of the largest, one of the finest and on account of its family life, one of the most interesting of many home estates. It is like a great park, abounding with walks, drives, rare shrubs, trees, and richly stored gardens...(of) all the experiments in so-named community life, to me “Awbury” is the most practical and beautiful.”

The spirit that Jellett describes remains strong at Awbury today, and in 2001, Awbury became an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
